I have always wanted to depict nature in its rhythm, light and colour since my childhood, having grown up in a place of great natural beauty. I am therefore working within the English Landscape Tradition of Constable and his successors. I believe that the most important quality in a picture, apart from the essential quality of craftsmanship, is its emotional content. Without this it becomes merely a literal description. Instead it is about responding to what is seen and experienced by selection and simplification, and the act of designing for wood engraving forces one to be disciplined in this.
